Biography
Born in The Philippines and raised in Australia, Anne Numont is a Sydney-based artist. In 2003, she completed an Honours degree in Design at College of Fine Arts, The University of New South Wales. Since then, she has traded as a broadcast designer in the television industry where projects she has worked on have been awarded locally and overseas.
In 2010, she reconnected with drawing as a form of creative therapy. Later that year she became a finalist in her first attempt at a professional art prize, The Dobell Prize for Drawing. After exhibiting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Numont began to seriously consider her art practice.
Since then, her work was selected and published in Curvy 8 (2012) which attracted over 1100 entries world-wide, a finalist in the Yen Art Awards Australia & New Zealand (2013), The Hutchins Art Prize Australia (2013), North Sydney Art Prize (2011, 2013, 2015), Cliftons Art Prize Asia-Pacific (2015), Hornsby Art Prize (2016 & 2017), Hunters Hill Art Prize (2017) and Northern Beaches Art Prize (2017). In 2015, her work was acquired by North Sydney Council. She is a continuing artist-in-residence at Alfred St Artist Studios in Sydney.
Artist Statement
Place, perception and memory are central to my art practice. Experimenting with method and scale in the field of contemporary drawing, I make landscapes and informal geographies. With a syncretist approach, references include migration, Australiana, my Filipino heritage, cubism, typography, weather systems, astrology and science. I am fascinated by the potential of light, landscape and mapping to project aspects of space, self and society.
While working, I relish the handmade and elemental: water in papermaking and earth in pastel. Fire and air are instrumental to excavations of personal history, connecting to core memories and rituals. The mercurial quality of nature helps me to reconcile inherent polarities of life such as permanence / temporality, home / dislocation, forgetting / remembering.
Tailored processes spawn different outcomes from drawing to handmade paper, collage, mixed media and, recently, installation. Underpinning my work is a state of being in-between and the possibilities this space can manifest.
Ultimately, my art practice helps me to engage with life, infinitely. It is about intimacy, inquiry, mindfulness and expression.
